Artist Statement for Kelly Lynne Wood

Through my work, I intervene in existing places and reinvest them with a fresh meaning and a new mystique. I draw attention to the space in its inherently meaningful present state and also allow access to its enveloping pest. In places often devoid of their past function, I recreate an atmosphere using a wide variety of mediums determined by the site itself: often a presence is felt, a playful moment is discovered, a memory is evoked, an imagination is triggered, or a twinge of nostalgia experienced. In a more direct fashion, I also interact with people in my performances, and invite them to reflect, imagine, and discover wonders within themselves and beauty in the world around them.
I subtly enhance and choreograph spaces, the architecture and the setting so that the viewers consciousness is activated and so that he/she notices various aspects of the surroundings and emotions within themselves that may have been over-looked. Normal sensations are always present but they are occasionally imperceptible because of lack of attention to them. Sometimes the process is as simple as releasing the space from its sameness or highlighting a place not always seen, in order to trigger the desire to experience life and the wonders we may ordinarily pass by. Often there is a sense of mystery, suspense, or physical inaccessibility in my installations, as I proceed in allowing only a glimpse into a space. I believe the inaccessible will captivate the viewer even further, and that the imagined space is truly capable of generating emotions, just as is the imagined past.
The places in which I choose to work are those which have touched me in some way and require an activation. I tend to work rather subtly, not obviously stating my intention or revealing my medium, although traces of my hand are evident. I often situate myself within these places prior to production for long periods of time - sitting, watching, walking, breathing only then am I able to intervene. I add to a space, but what I do blends with what already exists, letting the viewer marvel at the inherent qualities of the site itself. Rather than merely occupying a designated place, my art actually constitutes that place. Sometimes the space requires light, darkness, sound, video projections, or sometimes I must be present as I immerse myself in various rotes.
In my performances I invite the viewer to interact with me. Through storytelling, chatting, exchanging ideas, etc., I have found ways to communicate and to interact with others in an effective, and enjoyable manner. It is very important to me to get to know my community, as I believe that an ideal public space is more than just a place that all people wander through, it is one where a social life and dialogues occur. I wish to highlight the private and the collective experience of the private and the public, inside and outside the circle of intimate performances I create. Everyone has a story waiting to be shared, just as the buildings we live in contain a history of stories also waiting to be discovered and imagined.
My work is an invitation to look above what is immediately accessible and to imagine the space before, between, and beyond. I activate the consciousness of the viewer (reflecting and generating memory and imagination) through activating the consciousness of the place. I position a new idea within an old and familiar context in order to draw attention and increase awareness: a quiet contemplation moving toward so much more.
