HELINÄ
HUKKATAIVAL Since 1990 I have been working actively with performance art. Until now I have had about 60 different performances, most of them in Finland. To me performance is like a forgotten ritual or a dream, shared with the audience. Like a dream, it is also open to interpretation. My way of working has been silent, even meditative but not always serious. Ideas for the performances I often get from everyday objects and activities, such as whipping cream, knitting socks or chewing gum. My performances have often been designed for a specific space, like a gallery, or occasion, such as Hiroshima 50th anniversary. The duration of the performances has usually been about 10 - 20 minutes. I like them to be short, condensed and reduced from all unnecessary movement. Besides a few exceptions I have performed alone. An interesting experience was performing with a group of schoolchildren, 10 - 15 years of age ("Out ofthe Head", Pori 1999). I have also worked with interactivity by taking the audience as an active participant in the process. In these performances I have been constantly present for several hours or days waiting for the " customers". For instance "Pure Art" (1997 in Mänttä; Helsinki; Oslo) is a performance in which anybody can participate by taking a piece of chewing gum, chewing it well and giving it back to me. Then I shall, with careful hygiene", transform the chewed gum to a small work of abstract art, neatly under a plastic cover. The chewer gets the artwork to himself. My other interactive performances have been: Wandering Wisdom" (1994 Helsinki, Turku), based on the universal curlosity about ones future; Master of Colours" ( 1995 Turku, 1997 Helsinki, Oslo) - a variation of a street artist, Trash Art" (1998 Bern, 1999 Helsinki) during which I with a sewing machine made an artwork using the trash people have in their pockets and handbags. Bubble Chapel" (Tampere International Theatre Festival 2000) was an interactive installation, where people could sit a while and pop the bubbles of their life". In order to do this they got a piece of bubble plastic used in packages) |
